How to use this template
This template is great for showing project schedules. Each gantt is an event or task showing its start and end dates or times as well as the main category they belong to.
Data requirements
Your data would show one event per row as in this example:
start_date | end_date | project | assignee | department | progress |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
01/05/2019 | 04/05/2019 | Get oranges | Biff | Preparation | 0.9 |
03/05/2019 | 07/05/2019 | Get bowls | Biff | Preparation | 1 |
08/05/2019 | 13/05/2019 | Squeeze oranges | Kipper | Production | 0.4 |
09/05/2019 | 12/05/2019 | Filter juice | Kipper | Sales | 0.6 |
13/05/2019 | 19/05/2019 | Taste juice | Biff | Marketing | 0.3 |
Usage
Your data should at least have a start and an end date or time as well as some project tasks or events - project
in above example.
You would also typically define a grouping variable that categorizes your events by for example person or department responsible for the event - for example assignee
in the table above.
You can optionally add a second grouping variable that adds some sensible colors to your gannts - department
above. This coloring variable can be discrete as well as numerical like for example an importance score.
A progress variable between 0 and 1 (representing percentages between 0 and 100%) can further show how far along the process each task is.
Date and time handling
In order for your gantt bars to cover the period from the start all the way to the end date (or time) each event's end date should always be the first date after the event has finished. For example, if the event finishes on the 3rd of May your end_date
would be 04/05/2019
.
If you wanted to show an hourly gantt chart, you would need to follow the following datetime format: 2019-01-05T09:00:00.000Z
, which - in this case - represents 9AM on the 1st of May 2019. In a next step you would use the X axis settings to to show only hours and minutes.
API information
This section documents API usage specific to this template, so for an introduction we suggest you refer to the generic API documentation instead.
template: @flourish/gantt
version: 8
Template data
There are three different formats in which you can supply data to this template. The most convenient for you to use likely depends on the source of your data, as described below.
1. Array of arrays, and a bindings object
You can supply arrays of arrays to opts.data
, which might look
like:
{ data: { gantt: [ [ "GanttColumn1Value1", "GanttColumn2Value1", [ "GanttColumn1Value2", "GanttColumn2Value2", [ "GanttColumn1Value3", "GanttColumn2Value3", ... ] } }
where each array of arrays represents the rows in a data sheet.
To tell the API how the values from each column should be
associated with the keys that the template is expecting, you must also supply
an object attached to opts.bindings
. (The meanings of the
keys in the bindings object are documented
below.) The minimal bindings you can
supply for this template are as shown in this example:
{ template: "@flourish/gantt", version: "8", bindings: { gantt: { start_date: 0, // index of a column in your data end_date: 1, // index of a column in your data } }, data: { gantt: [ [ "GanttColumn1Value1", "GanttColumn2Value1", [ "GanttColumn1Value2", "GanttColumn2Value2", [ "GanttColumn1Value3", "GanttColumn2Value3", ... ] } }
All possible bindings that you can supply are shown in this example:
{ template: "@flourish/gantt", version: "8", bindings: { gantt: { start_date: 0, // index of a column in your data end_date: 1, // index of a column in your data task: 2, // index of a column in your data grouping: 3, // index of a column in your data color: 4, // index of a column in your data progress: 5, // index of a column in your data filter: 6, // index of a column in your data metadata: [7, 8, ...], // index(es) of column(s) in your data } }, data: { gantt: [ [ "GanttColumn1Value1", "GanttColumn2Value1", [ "GanttColumn1Value2", "GanttColumn2Value2", [ "GanttColumn1Value3", "GanttColumn2Value3", ... ] } }
2. Array of objects with arbitrary keys, and a bindings object
This format is most likely useful when you have data from an external source,
such as CSV data loaded from d3-dsv.
You should supply this attached to the opts.data
, which might look
like:
{ gantt: [ { "GanttHeader1": ..., "GanttHeader2": ..., ... }, { "GanttHeader1": ..., "GanttHeader2": ..., ... }, { "GanttHeader1": ..., "GanttHeader2": ..., ... }, ... ] }
... but with the keys being the column headers from your
source data instead. You must also supply an object attached to
opts.bindings
. The minimal bindings you can
supply for this template are as shown in this example:
{ template: "@flourish/gantt", version: "8", bindings: { gantt: { start_date: "GanttHeader1", end_date: "GanttHeader2", } }, data: { gantt: [ { "GanttHeader1": ..., "GanttHeader2": ..., ... }, { "GanttHeader1": ..., "GanttHeader2": ..., ... }, { "GanttHeader1": ..., "GanttHeader2": ..., ... }, ... ] } }
All possible bindings that you can supply are shown in this example:
{ template: "@flourish/gantt", version: "8", bindings: { gantt: { start_date: "GanttHeader1", end_date: "GanttHeader2", task: "GanttHeader3", grouping: "GanttHeader4", color: "GanttHeader5", progress: "GanttHeader6", filter: "GanttHeader7", metadata: ["GanttHeader8", "GanttHeader9", ...], } }, data: { gantt: [ { "GanttHeader1": ..., "GanttHeader2": ..., ... }, { "GanttHeader1": ..., "GanttHeader2": ..., ... }, { "GanttHeader1": ..., "GanttHeader2": ..., ... }, ... ] } }
(As before, the keys containing "Header" would be replaced by column names from your data source.)
3. Array of objects with template-defined keys
There is an alternative format you can use, which is likely to be easier to
use if your data is not from a spreadsheet source. With this alternative format
you supply your data to the template as
an array of objects, attached to opts.data
, where the keys must
be those used by the template, as documented below. In this case
there is no need to supply a bindings object, since the key names are already
those expected by the template. The required properties in the data
object are as follows (scroll down for a
description of what each property is):
{ template: "@flourish/gantt", version: "8", data: { gantt: [ { start_date: ..., end_date: ..., metadata: [...] }, ... ] }, ... }
And the full list of all possible properties is as follows:
{ template: "@flourish/gantt", version: "8", data: { gantt: [ { start_date: ..., end_date: ..., task: ..., grouping: ..., color: ..., progress: ..., filter: ..., metadata: [...] }, ... ] }, ... }
Meanings of the template data keys:
- gantt.start_date: start_date
- gantt.end_date: The end date or time of the event. If working with days, the end date should be the first day after the end date. So if your event stretches from 1/1. and ends on the 5/1. your end date should be the 6/1. This way your gantt bar will stretch across the last day of your project or task.
- gantt.task: task
- gantt.grouping: Select a categorical column to combine bars into groups on the Y axis
- gantt.color: Select a categorical column; each unique value in the column will become a color
- gantt.progress: Requires a number column with values between 0 and 1, representing the progress from 0 to 100%.
- gantt.filter: If set, creates a filter menu or time slider
- gantt.metadata: Add any columns here containing extra content to show in the popups
